Wait, what? SLOW IT DOWN!

While browsing the internet I came across a blog entry which does a technology compare between the 1980s and the 2012s. I almost can’t believe so much has happened in such a short space of time. The pace of change seems to be accelerating and I feel myself dramatically wanting to scuff my feet along the floor trying to resist the push of 2012 towards a yet another year of yet more blurring of the distinction between material reality and cyber reality. STOP! says I, but the damned conveyor belt moves on.

The author of that post posits social networking against chat softwares like ICQ (I remember! Not that I had an account. Never saw the point spending money chatting with people I’d see physically every day anyway). However, that is not the kind of position they occupy in my head. Chat exists ALONG with social networking: which feels more suffocating than if just Facebook existed. Despite a/s/l, IRC chatrooms were just so much more anonymous than facebook ever can be!

Existing in this new reality has its perks: it can really make you laugh sometimes. Yesterday, for instance, I observed a conversation on my homepage between two individuals. The topic was a song that supposedly parodies cheesy South Indian film music. One party took objection to the humour of the other and ended the brief debate by saying-“I end this conversation and our friendship here.”. And he did! He de-friended him! lol.gif eusa_shifty.gif

2012: the year when apparently grown-up academics can make and break friendships with the click of a button on a public wall. lol.gif

This is kaliyug, my fraands... eusa_whistle.gif

P.S. I am only slightly kidding about the drama. I really don’t know how to deal with the explosion of consumerist innovation. Should I turn into a Neanderthal and smash all the smartphones I come across, grunting and scratching my armpits, or should I embrace the evolving tribe of nonsense? I’m feeling a little bit lot wrong-footed here snivel.gif
